02  /  Problem

When every crate strains your back — day after day

In fresh-produce logistics, fruit and vegetable crates are lifted, carried and re-palletised by hand all day long. A single banana crate weighs around 19 kg — with 3,000 to 6,000 crates a day, a person quickly accumulates 10 to 15 tonnes.

Heavy crates, all day long
Lifting, carrying, moving from one pallet to the next: a banana crate weighs around 19 kg, and thousands of crates have to be picked every day.
Sensitive fresh produce
Fruit and vegetables can't be automated or stacked at will — gentle handling by hand remains essential.
Constant strain on the back
10 to 15 tonnes per person per day: that this is too much for the back over time has also been confirmed by the employers' liability insurance association.
Work in chilled areas
Ripening room, cold store and packing station are physically demanding — at low temperatures and across long shifts.
Passive exoskeletons fell short
Earlier passive models cut into the shoulder and were no longer worn — acceptance only comes with the right device.
Keeping skilled workers healthy
Satisfied, healthy packers are the scarcest factor in fresh-produce logistics — prevention pays straight back into the workforce.
Lifting, carrying and moving sensitive fresh produce cannot be fully automated. That's exactly where Exia can help — right at the existing packing station, without rebuilding the process.
“Back problems, worn discs, hernias: the exoskeleton is already a massive help in preventing them. So I say: even those who think they don't really need it should try it. Because the relief and satisfaction our people feel with the exoskeleton is really high.”Johannes Himbert · Managing Director · Himbert GmbH (fruit & vegetable wholesaler, Saarland)

In use at Himbert — fruit & vegetable wholesaler

No lab demos. At fruit and vegetable wholesaler Himbert in Saarland, German Bionic's AI exoskeletons are in use every day — in the ripening room, packing station and dispatch.

“Our colleagues were enthusiastic from the very start and have used the devices every day since. Operating them couldn't be simpler. The younger colleagues in particular just put the thing on, press a button — and immediately know what to do.”
